About

Join Smart Moves San José as we make strides to improve quality of life in our community.

Smart Moves San José is a program that encourages residents to increase the trips they take by walking, biking, and public transit. With this new program, the City aims to reduce barriers to and enhance benefits of using environmentally-friendly and health-enhancing means of travel. We want to make it easier for you to bike to work or your volunteer job, walk to the store, or take transit to a movie or sporting event.

The City is dramatically expanding its on- and off-street bikeway network, supporting the growth of bike share and car share services, and working closely with the Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority (VTA) to expand transit services. The City has also partnered with local organizations, such as the Silicon Valley Bicycle Coalition and California Walks, to encourage people who live and work in San José to use biking and walking as a means of travel as well as recreation.

Partners

The City of San José has partnered with a number of outstanding organizations that seek to encourage walking, biking, and transit. Their expertise and support have helped make this program possible:

California Walks - Stepping Up OF Health, Equity and Sustainability

San Jose Walks - San Jose Walks is a chapter of California Walks, a statewide organization of affiliated nonprofit and volunteer groups dedicated to creating healthy, safe, and walkable communities. California Walks shares resources with the local population, such as maps and downtown walking guides, and provides support for walking events, such as Viva Calle SJ. Viva Calle SJ is a free, annual recreation program that temporarily closes miles of San Jose streets to allow people to walk, bike, skate, play, and explore the city in a novel way. In partnership with Smart Moves San Jose, San Jose Walks will be leading walking events in downtown San Jose designed to highlight downtown’s hidden treasures as well as recommend great walking routes to key destinations.

Silicon Valley Bicycle Coalition

Silicon Valley Bicycle Coalition (SVBC) - The SVBC is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization based in San Jose. Its purpose is to create a healthy community, environment, and economy through bicycling for people who live, work, or play in San Mateo and Santa Clara counties. Among other things, SVBC offers personalized bike route planning as well as group rides and biking clinics to help get more people riding and doing so safely. Through Smart Moves San Jose, SVBC will be providing many of these services specifically to downtown residents this Spring.

Valley Transportation Authority
Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority (VTA) - VTA is Santa Clara County’s transit provider and congestion management agency. It provides bus, light rail, and paratransit services, and participates as a funding partner in regional rail service including Caltrain, Capital Corridor, and the Altamont Corridor Express. VTA is also responsible for countywide transportation planning, including congestion management, design and construction of highway, pedestrian, and bicycle improvement projects, and promotion of transit oriented development. VTA provides resources such as maps, emergency ride home services, and personalized trip planning in-person and through a new web-based platform. In conjunction with Smart Moves San Jose, VTA organizes public transit events.

Groundwerx Logo
Groundwerx - Groundwerx is a subgroup of the Property-Based Improvement District (PBID), managed by the San Jose Downtown Association. The group uses PBID business property tax funds to help keep downtown friendly and clean. The Groundwerx Ambassadors are easy to spot in bright green shirts. They help folks with directions, walk people to their car when requested, and report unusual events. The Groundwerx cleaning crew helps keep downtown clean with sidewalk sweeping, anti-graffiti efforts, and more.

MTC logo

Metropolitan Transportation Commission - The Metropolitan Transportation Commission (MTC) is the transportation planning, financing and coordinating agency for the nine-county San Francisco Bay Area. The agency collaborates with a network of other public agencies to help support the streets, roads, highways, transit systems and other transportation resources that help millions of people get to where they need to be. MTC provided the City of San Jose grant funds to create and execute the Smart Moves program.
