Transportation is the single largest contributor to greenhouse gas emissions in California. That is why San Jose has made a concerted effort over the years to expand opportunities for those who live and work in San Jose to travel by means other than solo driving.
For example, San Jose's 2020 Bike Plan includes the goal of completing a 500-mile bikeway network in the City by 2020. Envision San Jose, the City's adopted 2040 General Plan, commits the City to reduce the percentage who drive alone to work by nearly 50% while concurrently increasing the percentage who walk, bike, carpool or use transit.
