Quakes Climate Smart 2018
Take the Climate Smart Pledge &
Climate Smart San José is a plan to reduce air pollution, save water, and create a stronger and healthier community.

Together, we can make San José a better place for our families, children and future generations. Every action, big or small, makes a difference!

Here are 10 ways to be Climate Smart:
  1. Check out a DIY Home Energy Saving Toolkit from your library. It contains FREE items like LED light bulbs.
  2. Reduce outdoor irrigation and choose native and drought-tolerant plants.
  3. Carpool or take public transportation as often as possible.
  4. Wash clothes in cold water and dry on low heat or hang dry.
  5. Use a programmable thermostat and set it to 76°F in the summer, 68°F in the winter, and OFF when you are not home.
  6. Walk or bike on short everyday trips to improve health and reduce pollution.
  7. Get free personalized advice online from PG&E on reducing home energy use.
  8. Save energy with smart power strips that automatically shut down TVs and other power-draining devices when you're not using them.
  9. Choose electric options and look for the Energy Star® sticker when buying new appliances and electronics.
  10. Choose 100 percent clean energy from PG&E.

The big picture
Climate Smart San José builds upon the City’s legacy of innovation and sustainability leadership. The plan makes San José one of the first major U.S. cities to chart a course to meeting the greenhouse gas emission reduction targets of the international Paris Agreement.

How we got here
The City conducted extensive community outreach in 2017 in drafting the plan, which is administered by the San José Environmental Services Department. The City Council unanimously adopted Climate Smart San José on Feb. 27, 2018.

What's next
The City continues to reach out to the community to provide information about the plan and receive feedback from residents and businesses. The Environmental Services Department is building partnerships to support and implement Climate Smart San José.
