Do you have unused or expired medicine?

Quakes P2
Do you have unused or expired medicine? Don’t rush to flush!

Pollution Prevention Week, September 18-24, highlights the ways residents can prevent pollution before it begins. Do your part by safely disposing of your unused or expired medicines for free at a drop-off bin location.

The San José-Santa Clara Regional Wastewater Facility plays an important role in treating our wastewater to keep our Bay clean. When unused or expired medicines are disposed of down the drain or flushed down the toilet, they flow through the sanitary system to the Wastewater Facility, which was not designed to remove all pharmaceutical compounds. Trace amounts may pass through the Wastewater Facility and be released into the San Francisco Bay.

Let’s #KeepSJClean! Do not flush unused or expired medications down the toilet, place down the drain, or put in the garbage. Take unwanted medicine to a drop-off bin near you, and let others know by posting on social media using the hashtag, #P2Week!
