Fireworks are dangerous and illegal

Hi Neighbors! July 4th is around the corner. We want to remind you that possession and setting off ANY type of fireworks, including those classified as "safe and sane," is ILLEGAL in San José and most of Santa Clara County. Violators can face fines up to $1000. Show your respect for neighbors and veterans, and care for pets, by NOT using fireworks. Today, a true community spirit is best demonstrated when you respectfully protect others safety and well-being by NOT using fireworks. Fireworks are explosives and contain toxic materials. While Roman candles and other rocket type fireworks are more obviously dangerous and have caused loss of limbs, most injuries for young children actually come from sparklers. So please, take care of each other and kids by NOT using fireworks of any kind. Every year, we respond to hundreds of injuries and fires caused by fireworks. At the same time, our 911 Call Center becomes overloaded by people calling to report fireworks use, which creates a real risk for those with series emergencies. For fires and injuries, do call 911. To report the use of fireworks, please use our updated reporting form at If you don't have a mobile phone or computer, you can call 311 to report fireworks use. The best way to enjoy fireworks is at professional displays. Please visit for a list of professional pyrotechnic events. We want you to be safe out there, San José! So please do don't use fireworks.
